Our Philosophy

Our philosophy of substance abuse prevention and education is a holistic one. It works to make an impact on the young person’s whole life, including parents, teachers, friends and most of all themselves. Making responsible decisions about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs is more complex today than ever before. Mike Gimbel is dedicated to ensuring that youth have the best opportunity to grow up free of all illegal drugs.

Mike also believes that anyone who needs help with a substance abuse problem should have access to quality treatment regardless of their ability to pay. Mike has an excellent working relationship with both public and private substance abuse services in the state of Maryland and across the United States. Mike’s goal is to assist those people seeking help by guiding then through the often confusing treatment system and refer them to the most appropriate resource available.

Understanding the Adolescent
Substance Abuse Problem

Mike Gimbel Associates recognizes that a serious alcohol, tobacco and drug problem exists among many preteens and teenagers and that all young people are vulnerable. Mike understands that young people are vulnerable. Mike understands that young people are vulnerable. Mike understands that young people are easily swayed by what their peers feel is appropriate behavior. That self doubt can make youth vulnerable to the “quick fix” of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. In the State of Maryland, we have clear evidence that substance abuse is a problem. These statistics quantify the magnitude of the situation:

69.7% of Maryland 12th graders have tried some form of alcohol
29% of Maryland 12th graders have had five or more drinks on the same occasion within the past 30 days
26.5% of Maryland 10th graders have smoked cigarettes
5% of Maryland 6th graders have tried inhalants
34.9% of Maryland 12th graders used marijuana in the past year
6.4% of Maryland 8th graders have tried inhalants

Why Young People Use
Alcohol, Tobacco, & Other Drugs

Mike Gimbel Associates address the reasons that young people use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs including:
• The influence of peer pressure and the powerful need to fit in with one’s peers.
• The need to escape anxiety
• The desire to experience pleasurable feelings, to relax or to seek excitement
• To satisfy curiosity or to reduce boredom
• As an escape from an intolerable situation or as a means of masking low self-esteem
